OL SCHOOL WEDS Video-----Doug E Fresh

Although he began his recording career as a solo artist as one of the last artists on Enjoy Records and one of the first on Vintertainment Records (the same New York-based label owned by Vincent Davis that would later make a name of Hip-Hop artist Joeski Love and bring R&B icon Keith Sweat to ultimate fame), it was when he and a new team of DJs known as The Get Fresh Crew (Barry Bee and Chill Will) along with a newcomer named MC Ricky D (who would later achieve fame as Slick Rick) came to fledgling New Jersey-based Hip-Hop label Reality/Danya Records the following year and recorded "The Show" (which borrowed the melody of the Inspector Gadget theme), and "La Di Da Di", a tune that was completely voiced by MC Ricky D and backed by Doug E's beat box for the entire duration of the song. It was when both of these songs were released on a single (particularly 12" single) that broke him (and Slick Rick) into stardom. Both "The Show" and "La-Di-Da-Di" are considered two of the all-time greatest early hip hop classics, and, as such make up one of the first and only Hip-Hop singles to have two hit songs on the same..

Unfortunately, Slick Rick would leave the group after almost a year after the single was released leaving many wondering what happened to him until 1988 when he became a Def Jam artist and released his debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew soldiered on, now officially signed to Reality/Danya and releasing two albums from that period -- Oh, My God! from 1986 (which includes the hit song "All The Way To Heaven") and The World's Greatest Entertainer from 1988—both of which are now long out of print and extremely rare. The main single from the album The World's Greatest Entertainer was "Keep Risin' To The Top" which was named after Keni Burke's then-obscure 1981 hit "Keep Rising To The Top", which, thanks to being sampled in Doug E. Fresh's song, has become Keni's signature tune. Doug E.'s "Keep Risin' To The Top" also samples the main chorus phrase of Heatwave's 1976 classic, "Ain't No Half Steppin", which Big Daddy Kane also sampled that same year for his song of the same name.

In 1992, after a four-year hiatus, Doug E. Fresh joined with MC Hammer's label, Bust It Records and issued one album, Doin' What I Gotta Do, which (despite some minor acclaim for his single "Bustin' Out (On Funk)" which samples the Rick James 1979 single, "Bustin' Out") was a commercial failure.

In 1993, Doug E. Fresh found a new home at Island Records affiliated label Gee Street under their new division Gee Street Independent. At the time, he managed only to release one single which contained three songs -- "I-ight (Alright)", which was the main song, "Bounce", and "Freaks". Although "I-ight" (which originated the now-famous club chant "Heyyyyyy, YO!... I-iiiiight?") was slated to become the first major hit for Doug in 5 years, it was almost immediately overshadowed by "Freaks", a Dancehall tune beatboxed entirely by Doug E. and vocalized mainly by his protege, a Brooklyn-born Jamaican teenage newcomer named Lil' Vicious. The song received major radio and club play, followed by video play when the video was finally produced a few months into 1994. Lil' Vicious would soon drop the "Lil'" from his name and ink a deal with Sony Music's Epic Records for three years, although he would only sire one album, Destination Brooklyn.

In 1995, Slick Rick and Fresh reunited for a track on an album titled Play, which found Fresh back on his feet. Play received positive reviews; Bret Love wrote that the record is "a welcome flashback to the days when guns, drugs, sex and violence were not the genre's primary lyrical focus."

OL SCHOOL WEDS Video-----TWIN HYPE

Do It To the Crowd

For Thos Who Like to Groove

New Jersey’s Twin Hype released a pair of albums during a short career that spawned one undeniably brilliant single in the form of “Do It to the Crowd.” Twin brothers Sly (Glennis Brown) and Slick (Lennis Brown) were joined by DJ King Shameek (Jose Matos) for a self-titled 1989 album and Double Barrel, a 1991 follow-up — both of which were released on Profile. Each album had its fair share of filler, and neither Slick nor Sly were exemplary rappers, but singles like “Do It to the Crowd” and “Wrong Place, Wrong Time” provided thrills. The trio presumably split after the second album.....

Soul Assassins X BAMBU X PnoY hat....

Early this year, Bambu and Soul Assassins began talks on a collaboration project. Ideas were thrown around and what eventually came to fruition was a hat that would represent a community in Los Angeles that has since elapsed. Bambu brought Pnoy Apparel on board to handle the design and production of the hat. What was created was something that properly represents a niche community with a remarkable design that would look right sitting on anybody’s head. The colors are a manipulated version of the Philippine flag colors. The bottom of the brim is screen printed with a traditional “Headhunter” tattoo design. Inside the hat, there is a printed lyric line from Bambu’s song, “Paper Thin” that reads, “…tell the story of our people that they failed to mention…” The back of the hat boasts the infamous SA logo and the Philippine sun mark of Pnoy Apparel. Up front, it reads, “Philippines,” but when turned upside down, the customized script reads, “Los Angeles.” This ambigram truly embodies the concept of the hat. Along with the hat, Soul Assassins will present a mixtape that showcases Bambu over some of DJ Muggs’ hits. This mixtape promises to keep your speakers busy until the next project! The Soul Assassins X Pnoy Apparel X Bambu snap back will be sold as a package with the mixtape and a hat. Stay tuned to soulassassins.com, …hats will be shipping in two weeks

OL SCHOOL WEDS. Video-----BlackMoon

Black Moon (backronymed as Brothers who Lyrically Act and Combine Kickin Music Out On Nations) debuted in 1992, with the release of the single "Who Got Da Props?". The song became something of an underground phenomenon, and charted on the Billboard Hot 100. With the help of DJ Chuck Chillout, the group landed a record deal with Nervous Records and released their debut album, Enta da Stage, in late 1993. The album included "Who Got Da Props?", as well as the singles "How Many MC's...", "Buck Em Down", and another Hot 100 Hit, "I Got Cha Opin (Remix)". Enta da Stage went on to sell over 350,000 copies in the U.S., and is now regarded as an underground hip hop classic. Following the album's release, the group temporarily broke up.

During the group's hiatus, DJ Evil Dee continued his production career with Da Beatminerz, and lead MC Buckshot headed out and formed his own supergroup called the Boot Camp Clik, featuring fellow Brooklyn locals Smif-n-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C.. Following the releases of the debuts from Smif-n-Wessun (Dah Shinin'), Heltah Skeltah (Nocturnal), and O.G.C. (Da Storm), Black Moon reformed on Buckshot's label Duck Down Records. In late 1996, Nervous Records released a Black Moon compilation album titled Diggin' In Dah Vaults, which featured a number of remixes and b-side tracks. After the group's split with Nervous Records, Black Moon became entangled in a legal battle over the licensing rights of their group name, which lasted for a number of years. The case was finally settled in 1998, and they were able to license the name through Nervous.

In 1999, they released their long awaited second album War Zone. The album saw a change in the group's musical style, with a more mature Buckshot showing off a calmer, more serious lyrical delivery, and also featured a new lo-fi production sound from Da Beatminerz. The album's singles "Two Turntables & A Mic" and "This is What it Sounds Like (Worldwind)" made small impact, and the group wasn't able to properly capitalize on their hype. Despite the somewhat disappointing sales, the album received good reviews. 1999 also saw the solo debut album from Buckshot, titled The BDI Thug, which was seen as a major disappointment. The album was met with very mediocre reviews and little sales. Black Moon and the Boot Camp Clik were largely missing from the hip hop scene between 2000 and 2001.

The Camp returned in 2002 for their second group album, The Chosen Few. Black Moon returned in 2003 for the release of their third album Total Eclipse. The album featured the underground hit "Stay Real", as well as two music videos, shot for the singles "Stay Real" and "This Goes Out to You". The album, like their previous efforts, received good reviews, but wasn't able to reach outside the underground hip hop audience. DJ Evil Dee has continued production work with Da Beatminerz, and Buckshot has continued work with the Boot Camp Clik. In 2005, Buckshot released a collaboration album with producer 9th Wonder titled Chemistry. In 2006, DJ Evil Dee and his brother Mr. Walt released a mixtape titled Alter The Chemistry, which paired Buckshot's vocals from the Chemistry album with classic Black Moon beats....Enjoy!!

OL SCHOOL WEDS. Video-----Freestyle Fellowship

Freestyle Fellowship are a rap group from Los Angeles consisting of rappers Aceyalone, Myka 9, P.E.A.C.E., Self Jupiter and producer J Sumbi. Their vocal techniques focusing on the method of the freestyle, as well as a successful infusion of hip hop and jazz, established the group as forerunners in the sub-genre of jazz rap, and also placed them amongst prominent West Coast underground hip hop acts of the early 1990s like Hieroglyphics, Abstract Rude & Tribe Unique, and The Pharcyde. They are part of a hip hop collective known as Project Blowed. The group was formed at the Good Life Café in Los Angeles during the early 90s. Myka Nyne stated in an interview that he grew up with Aceyalone and Self Jupiter and knew them since elementary school, and he met P.E.A.C.E. in 10th grade. Before the Fellowship, Aceyalone, Spoon (of) Iodine, and Myka Nyne were in a group called the MC Aces in high school.

After releasing the album To Whom It May Concern… in 1991, the Fellowship became known in tape-trading circles, identified by their range in rhyming, at times bordering on Jazz scat, and Afrocentric messages over jazz inspired beat production. Their 1993 release Innercity Griots is acknowledged by many to be among the best hip hop albums of the 90s.

In 1993, the group went on hiatus due to the four year incarceration of Self Jupiter. After his release, the Fellowship reunited to record Shockadoom in 1998 (released 2002). Temptations was released in 2001.

The members of the Fellowship have all put out solo albums, with Aceyalone and Myka 9 being the most prolific. In addition to their solo work, Aceyalone and Myka 9 recorded two albums with Abstract Rude as Haiku D'Etat.

In 1999, P.E.A.C.E. won second place in the Scribble Jam freestyle battle.....Enjoy!!!
